Joe Flacco, A Waste of Cap Space

This quick post is in response to Flacco's agent's comments about how "The Ravens made a dumb move [concerning Flacco's contract]."  (http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9313075/joe-flacco-agent-joe-linta-baltmore-ravens-made-dumb-move-2012).  The point the article makes (or the point that Joe Linta is making) is that the Ravens could have signed Flacco to a more cap-friendly deal  a year ago, before his super bowl triumph.  However, let's look at this more reasonably.  If Flacco had been signed to this bigger deal a year ago, who would the Ravens have had to cut in order to support the new contract?  Would the Ravens have even won the super bowl?  Would Flacco's value have been higher this off-season?  Would he have even earned this new contract?  So, Linta is right that they would have saved money on Flacco's contract, but they probably would not have one a Super Bowl last year.  So, my feeling is that the Ravens made the right move at the time. Just based on how the Ravens snuck into the Super Bowl, and squeezed by with a victory, I don't think it would be too ridiculous to say that the Ravens' chance at winning the Super Bowl would have been greatly diminished had Flacco restructured his contract last year.  Instead, the Ravens got their one super bowl.  The only Super Bowl that they will probably win for the next few years at least.  Joe Flacco isn't necessarily a bad quarterback.  The problem I have with him is that he's overvalued (based on his contract)  As long as the Ravens are overspending on Flacco, the rest of the roster will have to bear the burden of his contract.  The cap hit only increases over the next few years.
